Imagine my heart as a snowglobe: a suburban house, a wife who drives our two children to soccer practice while I gather the backyard leaves in a neat pyre

with a Labrador named Charlie, who understands in his canine way why I must pause between each step, watching the leaves, late in falling, with a rake in my hands.
