Poem, Love

06/17/2010 § 1 Comment

I am writing these words for you.
I hope they get under your skin,

Caress
the length of your spine
from inside out (quaver
like a willow dear) even
those spaces in between the bones
where you’ve enclosed yourself
into a chrysalis.

(I have seen you
in your element—
how you sigh with your eyes
the way only you can,
mysteriously, lonelily,
April sleeps in your pupils)

I mean for these words
to unfurl your silence
petal
by petal

You see?
each one bears a name
that belongs to you only
there is holiness
close to your heart
coal-hot
beneath your breast

(but something in me understands
this indelible music; you carry your silence
like a torch under pluvial skies)

Language is love
and so too, our silence:
(these words
are all that remains
between you and I
now)
